What is the difference between natural and synthetic sapphire?

In theory nothing. But natural sapphire as rule can has the uncontrolled impurities in large concentrations to affect the optical and mechanical performance of the sapphire. Synthetic sapphire can be colored also by controlled addition of specific impurities. For example, Chromium doped Sapphire is Ruby.
